All Faithful Expected to Wear Mask at Indoor Services
December 14, 2021
The Catholic Diocese of San Diego is expecting all faithful to wear a mask at its indoor public Masses and other indoor services, regardless of vaccination status, starting on Dec. 15.
A new state mandate takes effect that day, announced by the California Department of Public Health to respond to the spike in cases and hospitalizations across the state and the detection of the Omicron variant.
The diocese announced the mask requirement on Dec. 14 in a letter from Auxiliary Bishop John Dolan to pastors.
“We ask all parishioners, out of concern for their own personal health risk due to the new variant and the general concern for the health of others, to comply with the new requirement,” wrote Bishop Dolan in his letter.
The mandate will be in effect until Jan. 15, 2022, when state health authorities said it would be re-evaluated. It’s the latest one issued by the state to slow the spread of COVID-19, which had claimed more than 74,700 Californians as of mid-December, at an average rate of 49 per day.

Response to COVID-19 (updated 3/21)
In compliance with the Governor’s Executive Order asking all Californians to “shelter in place,” all parishes and schools of the diocese in San Diego and Imperial Counties will remain closed until further notice.
As a diocese, we strongly support these recommendations and defer to the opinion of health experts. This is not a challenge to our Catholic beliefs. On the contrary, we respect the science and want no part of putting the health of our fellow parishioners or their families at risk.

-
Mass cannot be celebrated publicly in any form or place.
-
Baptisms which cannot be postponed, must be private and include only members of the immediate family.

A message to our community

Bishop Robert W. McElroy made the very difficult decision of suspending the public celebration of Mass in the Diocese of San Diego.
Effective Monday,March 16th, 2020 no public daily or weekend Masses will be held until further notice. This is in compliance to Governor Newsom's executive order encouraging everyone to "Stay Home" in order to protect the health of our entire community.
Furthermore Bishop McElroy has granted to all Catholics in the Diocese of San Diego dispensation from the obligation from Sunday Mass during the coming weeks.
God has given us powerful gifts of technology that can be used for His Glory!
One of the ways that we will continue to be connected is by live streaming Mass thru our social media. You can also stream Sunday Masses celebrated by priests and bishops of our diocese in English, Spanish and Vietnamese every week thru our diocesan website at www.sdcatholic.org

We encourage everyone to stay home; only going out when essentials are needed and continue praying for the health and safety of all.
